Haunted Profile: Island of the Dolls

Xochimilco (sō-chē-ˈmēl(ˌ)-kō) is one of the sixteen delegaciones or boroughs within Mexican Federal District. The borough is centered on the formerly independent city of Xochimilco, which was established on what was the southern shore of Lake Xochimilco in the pre-Hispanic period. Today, the borough consists of the eighteen “barrios” or neighborhoods of this city along with fourteen “pueblos” or villages that surround it, covering an area of 125 km2 (48 sq mi). While the borough is somewhat in the geographic center of the Federal District, it is considered to be “south” and has an identity separate from the historic center of Mexico City. This is due to its historic separation from that city during most of its history. Xochimilco is best known for its canals, which are left from what was an extensive lake and canal system that connected most of the settlements of the Valley of Mexico. These canals, along with artificial islands called chinampas attract tourists and other city residents to ride on colorful gondola like boats called “trajineras” around the 170 km (110 mi) of canals. This canal and chinampa system, as a vestige of the area’s pre-Hispanic past, has made Xochimilco a World Heritage Site; however, environmental degradation of both the canals and the chinampas is severe and ongoing, putting that status in question for the future.

The canals in the waters of Lake Xochimilco were initially created along with that of a kind of artificial agricultural plots called chinampas. Chinampas were invented by the pre-Hispanic peoples of the region around 1,000 year ago as a way to increase agricultural production. On the shallow waters of the lakes, rafts were constructed of juniper branches. Onto these rafts floating on the water, lakebed mud and soil were heaped and crops planted. These rafts, tied to juniper trees, would eventually sink and a new one built to replace it. Over time, these sunken rafts would form square or rectangular islands, held in place in part by the juniper trees. As these chinampa islands propagated, areas of the lake were reduced to canals. These “floating gardens were an important part of the economy of the Aztec Empire by the time the Spanish arrived. Today, only about 5,000 chinampas, all affixed to the lake bottom, still exist in their original form, surrounded by canals and used for agriculture. The rest have become solid ground and urbanized. In the center of Xochimilco, there about 200 chinampas, covering an area of 1,800 hectares. However, one reason the number has decreased is that smaller chinampas have been combined to create larger ones.

The best-known chinampa in Xochimilco belonged to a man named Julián Santana Barrera, a native of the La Asunción neighborhood. Santana Barrera was a loner, who was rarely seen in most of Xochimilco. He came to fame because he would collect the old broken bodies of dolls from the canals and rubbish tips, and then hang them from branches and tie them to tree trunks to keep away evil spirits and appease the spirit of a dead girl he had found. He would state that he believed that the dolls were somehow still “alive” but “forgotten” by their owners and at night, these dolls are said to walk around the island killing animals, and other places were “discovered” in the early 1990s, when the area was being cleared of excessive water lilies. The Island would become known as “Island of the Dolls” or “Isla de las Muñecas”. The dirty, dismembered and creepy dolls have been placed throughout the island in an attempt to ward away evil and to appease one insatiable spirit in particular.

It is said that a young girl drowned many years ago on this island and that the dolls are possessed with her spirit. The dolls have been witnessed moving their heads, arms and even opening their eyes with no explanation. People have claimed to hear the dolls whispering to each other and some who have passed by the island on boats, claim that they could hear the dolls beckoning them to come ashore. But how did all of these creepy and allegedly possessed dolls get there?
Don Julian Santana Barrera was the islands caretaker for many years. Julian is responsible for gathering and hanging the dolls around the island. One story tells of Don Julian finding the drowned girl and being unable to save her life. A short while later, still disturbed by the incident, Julian was near the canal when he saw a doll floating by. Believing that the doll belonged to the young girl, he scooped it up and hung it from a tree by the water, as a way of showing respect and easing the girl’s spirit.
Soon Julian came to believe that the island was haunted by the girl who had drowned and began to hang more dolls in an attempt to keep her spirit at bay. He soon came to believe that the dolls themselves were inhabited by the dead girls spirit, yet he continued to collect and hang the creepy dolls all over the island. His doll collecting soon became an obsession, as he traded his things for more dolls and collected them from garbage in some cases. It was as if Julian was driven by some unseen force. (some say madness)

He would soon be complaining to friends and family that he could hear voices from the water where the girl had drowned. Calling him. The voices were asking him to come into the water, but he did not want to go.

Most people ignored the stories of Don Julian, until one day when Julian was found dead on the Island. He was found in the water, in the same spot the girl had been found. Had he finally answered the spirit’s call? It is believed by many that Don Julian has now joined the other spirits of the island.

Locals are firm believers that the island of the dolls is haunted. It has since been turned into a tourist attraction, at which visitors bring even more dolls to leave on the island. Since the death of Julian, the creepy island has become more popular and has been featured in many articles and even on television, as an episode of Syfy’s “Destination Truth”. Many have claimed to have captured the dolls movement and voices on film and audio, including the crew of Destination Truth.

So is this island charged with negative energy and haunted by the spirits of the young girl and Don Julian Santana Barrera? Many people say yes. But as usual..You decide. Below is a video with many different images depicting the dolls from Isla de las Muñecas.

Who Are???

missd615
Your Profile
95%
Openness
Your high level of openness suggests that you are imaginative, creative, and comfortable with variety and change. But you can also tend towards individualistic behavior and impractical thinking.
21%
Conscientiousness
You like to act immediately on impulse, which can be both effective and fun. But if taken to the extreme this can produce undesirable long term consequences for yourself and others.
42%
Extraversion
Your low level of extraversion suggests you are likely to be more reserved than other people, enjoy time alone and value maintaining strong relationships with a few close friends.
67%
Agreeableness
You value getting along with others, so are considerate, friendly, and willing to compromise your interests for the benefit of the group around you. As a result you tend to be very popular.
52%
Neuroticism
You are emotionally reactive and prone to react intensely to events with feelings that linger for some time. This can affect your ability to think clearly or cope with change and stress.
OUTLOOK
Realist
Realists like to think they see things the way they really are. But it’s important to remember that everyone sees the world differently. You might tend to keep a level head, and don’t excite easily, but this can leave you susceptible to bouts of gloominess. If you feel yourself moving towards a negative emotional extreme, try looking to other people for fresh perspectives.
CHARACTER
Thoughtful
Thoughtful people have a very giving and sympathetic character and are genuinely interested in and concerned about others. However, they can sometimes lack the persistence to follow through with their good intentions. Luckily, you’re very good at inspiring good feelings and actions in others who can help carry you along too.
SELF CONTROL
Reserved
You may feel a bit conflicted when you’ve been wronged. On the one hand it can affect you deeply to the point of feeling victimized, but on the other you can be scared of saying something about it for fear of upsetting other people. The result is that your anger might be directed inwards, which is very unhealthy. You can’t always be the nice guy.
COMPOSURE
Direct
Direct people can find it hard to resist their urges and impulses. In fact, when they really want something it’s hard for them to keep their desire in check. If you find it all too easy to sacrifice your long-term goals for instant gratification, or wake up with a major headache the next morning, this might be an aspect of your life that would benefit from a bit more concentration.
TASTE
Creator
Your real interests lie in creative activities. You can seem like quite a private person, but you’re equally comfortable pursuing your interests with a group of like-minded people or by yourself. People who share this characteristic like a challenge they can get their teeth into and really focus on without any distractions.
SOCIABILITY
Humble
People with this characteristic tend to be modest and self-effacing – sometimes in the extreme. They enjoy their privacy and their own company, but are also sympathetic to the needs of others. In fact, sometimes they can be too trusting of people, which can lead to them being taken advantage of. If you recognize this trait in yourself, it’s important to have someone you’re sure you can trust looking out for you.
ACTION
Laid back
Laid back people don’t worry too much about big plans and goals. They’re much more likely to keep a fairly clean slate so they’re able to respond to those sudden important jobs that always seem to crop up. You might sometimes lack the motivation to take charge or avoid coming up with new ideas, but you know deep down that putting in the effort will benefit you in the long run.
ATTITUDE
Progressive
People with progressive attitudes tend to have a great deal of faith in human nature and believe in education, co-operation and free thinking as ways to help develop society. They are willing to try new ideas and solutions and take a thoughtful approach to issues like social problems. It sounds like you tend to be seen as the voice of reason in most situations.
PROCESS
Dreamer
Dreamers get very excited by the prospect of new ideas and ways of seeing the world, but they tend to lose their way in theoretical possibilities and flights of fancy. If this sounds like you, you might be seen as a fantastic starter but not so great finisher. But, no one can fault your enthusiasm and ability to thrive in the uncertainty of the new. Force yourself to be a bit more organized and you’ll blow people away.
RESILIENCE
Sensitive
Sensitive people are extremely aware of potential dangers and problems around them – perhaps a little too aware sometimes. In fact, they tend to purposefully imagine worst-case scenarios. If you recognize this trait in yourself, rather than let yourself be overcome by fear use these theoretical situations to stimulate yourself to come up with imaginative solutions.
